E-commerce is an electronic method of doing business and the basic purpose of an e-commerce site is to let users browse through your product offerings and make purchases online. To serve its purpose, essential functionalities include user logon, a product catalog, and a shopping cart. Graphics, banners and online billing & payment interfaces may be considered non-essential to the operation of the site but they do add value by attracting and retaining customer attention and facilitating online transactions.
Due to its functional nature, such a site works best using more conventional designs, with an emphasis on navigation and process orientated screens.
Company information, products or services
The purpose of a company services and info website is to act as an electronic brochure for your company. Its primary function is to advertise your company's products and/or services and to encourage would-be customers to contact you. Such a site should enable the user to locate any information they require quickly and easily, with a priority on contact methods, using a navigation system that is intuitive and easy to use.
As with any marketing, effective design is essential in conveying the appropriate company image and on such a site you may choose to use more "flashy" design methods. However, relative to the the nature of your business, care would need to be taken to ensure that a good balance between loading times and design features was maintained.
News portal
The primary purpose of a news portal is to effectively provide the user with both the latest and archived news items. The first matter at hand would be to decide whether the site was to cover general subject matter or if it was to be subject-specific and consideration would need to be given to the availability of the resources needed to maintain such a site - primarily man-power and/or information sources.
Designs would need to be functional, with a focus on navigation both site-wide and inter-article.
